about

Happy new year! Let's change gears a bit, in the form of this set of "Playthroughs" material; literally the first recorded examples of the piece / idea / patch / method, all recorded live to DAT around late 1998, predating both the Kranky disc & even the "21:30 for Acoustic Guitar" set by a good year.

16 pieces, ranging from short timbral studies to more long-form explorations, all utilizing the early system centered around TC Electronic's "Spark FX Machine." The signal chain was a Bentley acoustic guitar, played via a Dean Markley pickup into the 1/8" microphone input jack of a Mac G3 laptop into mdaTracker, then Steinberg's Karlette & a few other random plugins into the Spark reverb - this was long before the GRM Shuffler became such a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Most of this follows the familiar wash of slowly aggregating held sine-wave clusters, although I was surprised to find a number of more rhythmic examples amidst the more blissed-out material. The final piece works a held chord through a series of filters & assorted digital deconstructions in an approach presaging the louder segments of "Recorded in Lisbon" by a good 5 years.

"rsp" in the title stands for "Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge Special Projects" - a sub-series of Reckank that dealt with more conceptual, limited-run CD-r titles. Although this tape of material was marked as such, it has never been available in any form until now!
